What Are CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns?

A dentist making a CEREC crown

A dental crown is a deluxe filling that instead of “filling in” a removed spot of damaged enamel, it fits over the entire reshaped tooth like cap. Dental crowns are ideal for repairing teeth with excessive decay or wear and tear, pain or sensitivity, a broken tooth, or aesthetic issues like discoloration or misshapenness.

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics or “CEramic REConstruction.” These crowns are unique because unlike traditional versions, they allow Dr. Bell to design, create, and place your new restoration in a single appointment instead of two separate ones.

Using CEREC technology, Dr. Bell can produce your crown right here in the office, eliminating the need for you to wear a temporary crown while an outside lab creates the final version. In addition to producing a durable, beautiful restoration, CEREC offers unprecedented convenience and protection for your tooth in a fraction of the time!

The Process of Getting a CEREC Same-Day Dental Crown

Getting a CEREC crown is easy! First, Dr. Bell will administer local anesthetics to ensure you remain comfortable during treatment. Once your tooth is numb, he will reshape the tooth by removing the damaged enamel. This will also help the crown fit correctly. Then, he’ll take some digital impressions of the tooth, creating a 3D model. Digital images are not only more accurate than those old-fashioned putty models, they’re also a lot more comfortable for the patient!

Next, the model is sent from the computer to the in-office CEREC milling machine, and in about one hour the machine will craft a crown from a solid block of dental porcelain or ceramic which has been customized to match the shape, size, and color of your natural tooth.

Finally, Dr. Bell will have you try on the crown, and he’ll make any last-minute adjustments if necessary. The crown will then be seated over your tooth, and you’ll be free to go use it just as you would your natural teeth!

Benefits of CEREC Crowns Vs. Traditional Crowns

CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns offer a variety of incredible benefits over traditional dental crowns, including:

  • Convenience – Because they’re made right here in the office while you wait, you’ll only need to visit us once rather than twice to repair your tooth.
  • No temporary crown – Temporary crowns can sometimes be uncomfortable or become loose or damaged. They also carry dietary restrictions to ensure they don’t fall out before it’s time for them to be replaced. With CEREC, you won’t need to wear a temporary crown, so there’s no need to worry about these issues.
  • Digital impressions – Old fashioned dental impressions used to require you to bite down on messy putty for a minute or more. Many patients disliked the taste of this goop, and the trays often made them gag. CEREC relies on 100% digital impressions, meaning they’re not only more comfortable, but the results arrive faster and are more precise.
  • Lifelike results – Dental porcelain is very similar in appearance to natural tooth enamel and can even be shaded to look like your real teeth.
  • Better oral health – Because traditional crowns can contain metals like gold, nickel, and mercury, they aren’t recommended for patients with metal allergies or sensitivities. CEREC crowns contain no metals, which can help you avoid oral health risks like mercury exposure, temperature sensitivity, and allergic reactions to alloys.
  • Cost – Although CEREC crowns may seem more expensive because of how advanced their technology is, their costs are often quite similar to traditional crowns. Because Dr. Bell doesn’t need to rely on a middleman at an outside lab, he can pass those savings along to you. Plus, because your entire treatment can be done in one appointment, you won’t need to pay for multiple visits.
